Essex New Look stores under threat

HARLOW’S New Look store could be under threat, following rumours that the international fashion retailer may be shutting 22 stores in Essex. Newspaper reports have revealed that the company is planning to close down a further 40 high street stores in the UK within the next year.

Essex stores include Harlow, Bishop Stortford, Chelmsford and Brentwood. If these stores and many others were to close New Look would see a 10 per cent reduction in the number of stores in the UK.

A spokesman for New Look said ‘No official decisions have been made yet but I cannot confirm whether this is true or not. I also cannot confirm if Harlow will be one of the retail stores that gets shut down. No official statement confirming if stores will definitely be shutting down has been released.’

Staff are said to be concerned about losing their jobs. The company spokesman said that he completely understood staff and public concerns: ‘If the stores do get shut down we understand and sympathise.’ However, with supposed plans to axe several stores, people could face being jobless.
