‘THIS GIRL Can’ festival debuts in Harlow to persuade women that being active can be fun.

Organisers of the festival hope to encourage women to get involved in the campaign regardless of their age, size or abilities, on February 3 at Stewards Academy.

The Harlow event, which begins at 9:30am ending at 2pm, allows girls of all walks of life to experience a range of activities and find one that is suitable for them.

Activities throughout the day include dance, aqua aerobics, karate, rugby, trampolining, netball and a range of fitness classes.

Kelly Harman, Ambassador of ‘This Girl Can’ and main organiser of the event, revealed, ‘The minimum age for the event is 14 which allows mothers not to worry about their children and to have some time to themselves. It gives them time to focus on themselves.’

With ideas to make the festival an annual event, plans are already in force to run more activities throughout the year.

Juliette Raison, Sport and Physical Activity Officer at Active Essex, commented, ‘This Girl Can are hoping that over 200 women will attend the festival in Harlow where we hope to encourage them that being active can be fun. We are looking at changing the location for the event each year. Maybe next year could be Harlow College.’

Workshops are also available with mental health talks, a free health check and coping with stress from West Essex Mind along with refreshments available throughout the day.

Hazel Cash, 17 and currently studying A-Levels at Harlow College, stated, ‘Sports bring groups of people together, I’m sure the event would attract many Harlow girls into getting involved and becoming active.’
